Getting started
If you have used Windows, you already know most of Steel OS.
The desktop
- Start menu: the Steel OS button at the bottom left, or press the Super key (the Windows key). Start typing to search for any app, file or setting.
- Taskbar: along the bottom. Pinned apps on the left, open windows next to them, the clock, Wi-Fi, sound and notifications on the right.
- Windows open on top of each other, like Windows. Drag them by the title bar; the buttons at the top right minimise, maximise and close.
- Four desktops: extra screens to spread your windows across. Press Super+1 to 4 to switch.
The Steel OS Portal
The Portal is the icon with four tiles on the taskbar. It has:
- Welcome: the website, the App Store, keyboard shortcuts, Update now and Report a problem.
- Steel Apps: popular apps by category, one click each.
- More Apps and Tools, Media Apps, Manage Steel OS, Tweak Systems, Troubleshoot: extra tools for when you need them.
Settings
Open System Settings from the start menu for Wi-Fi, displays, sound, Bluetooth, printers, users and the look of the desktop.

The welcome steps you saw at first login can be run again any time: start menu, Steel OS Setup.
