Steel Shield
Built-in, free virus protection. No subscription, no ads, nothing to sign up for.
What it does by itself
- Downloads: every file that lands in Downloads is checked within seconds.
- USB drives: when you plug one in, a notification asks Scan this drive? Programs and documents are checked first.
- Weekly: your home folder is checked on Tuesday afternoon, at the lowest priority. It waits while you're playing a game.
- Definitions: the list of known threats updates every hour.
If it finds something
The file is moved to quarantine, where it can't run. Nothing is ever deleted without you choosing to. A notification says what it was, in plain English, with Restore and Details buttons.
Trust the file (for example a game mod or a tool you know)? Click Restore, or in Steel Shield choose Quarantine, the file, then Restore it and always allow this file.
Open Steel Shield
Start menu, Steel Shield, or the Steel OS Portal, Welcome, Steel Shield. It shows whether you are protected and lets you:
- Scan now (your home folder) or Scan a file or folder.
- See Quarantine: restore or delete items.
- See the History of what was found.
- Turn download scanning on or off.
Right-click any file or folder in Dolphin and choose Scan with Steel Shield.
"Needs attention"
Steel Shield never shows a green tick when something is wrong. If the definitions are old or a part has stopped, it says so and offers Fix now.
Check that it works
Download the harmless EICAR test file from eicar.org. Within seconds Steel Shield moves it to quarantine and tells you. Then delete it from Quarantine.
Steel Shield uses ClamAV with definitions from Cisco Talos. It is strongest against known threats; Steel OS's read-only system, signed updates and app sandboxes protect against the rest.
